Nunavut Premier Eva Aariak has temporarily taken over as justice minister from Louis Tapardjuk, who has been stripped the portfolio over his remarks about domestic violence.
In a news release Saturday, Aariak said a recent email written by Tapardjuk contained inappropriate comments, which she said he had since retracted.
Discussing Inuit traditional knowledge and the justice system, Tapardjuk wrote that in domestic disputes the man is usually charged, even though the woman may have started the conflict.
Tapardjuk suggested in the email that both parties often share the blame in domestic disputes. As well, he said, delays in the justice system can lead to divorce and suicide.
The release did not specify to whom Tapardjuk had sent his email.
Aariak said she believes Tapardjuk can continue to be a productive member of cabinet. He remains government house leader, minister of languages, and minister of culture, language, elders and youth.
Tapardjuk sent out his own release on Saturday afternoon, apologizing for his remarks.
