Staff at Samuel Hearne Secondary School in Inuvik, N.W.T., were still cleaning up Wednesday after a weekend break-in that resulted in major damage to some classrooms.

School officials said that sometime over the weekend, vandals climbed in through an open back window and trashed the high school's music room and shop classroom.

They poured paint over equipment and floors, spray-painted walls, smashed musical instruments and destroyed computers. The vandals also flooded the school with water and set off fire extinguishers.

(Chris Harbord/CBC)"I'm really disappointed. It just blew me away," Ronald Binder, a custodian at the school, told CBC News on Wednesday.

"I didn't know what to say when I came into work Monday. This is not the first time we got broken into. The schools seem to be a target for vandalism just about every summer."

The high school had most of its windows broken in September. The school had to spend about $30,000 to repair those windows.

Contractors have been hired to clean up the latest mess, which is expected to take months. Binder said the cleanup will likely cost the school tens of thousands of dollars.

Inuvik RCMP said in a news release that they are investigating the break-in.
