A possible strike at Whitehorse General Hospital may have been averted, as hospital management and the union representing 150 of its nurses and other health-care professionals reached a tentative agreement Friday.

Hospital chief executive officer Joe MacGillivray told CBC News that he would not comment on the agreement until it's approved by the facility's board of directors and by affected staff.

Talks between the hospital and the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada resumed this week, with the help of a federally-appointed conciliator. The previous round of talks broke off in April.

The union has demanded better wages and improved working conditions.

On Tuesday, the union had announced that its Whitehorse General Hospital members had voted in favour of strike action during the summer, if necessary.
