Former federal Conservative candidate Richard Edjericon has been promoted to chair of the Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board, the federal government has announced.

Edjericon, who made an unsuccessful bid for the Western Arctic seat in 2006, was first appointed to the eight-member board by Ottawa a year ago.

The Dettah-based consultant replaces Gabrielle Mackenzie-Scott, whose three-year term expires April 1.

Under Mackenzie-Scott's tenure, the board came under fire for several controversial decisions it made regarding mining projects.

It rejected proposed uranium drilling near the Upper Thelon River because of the cultural importance of the area to the Lutselk'e Dene.

It also recommended an end to the free-entry mineral-staking system, which allows claim-staking on all Crown land in the North.

The board's recommendations go to Indian and Northern Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl, who makes the final decision on the proposed projects.
