A Yellowknife court heard Thursday that Emrah Bulatci has secured two lawyers, which means court proceedings can go ahead for the man accused of killing a Mountie last October in Hay River, N.W.T.
Bulatci, 23, was in Yellowknife that morning in his third appearance since being charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of RCMP Const. Christopher Worden on Oct. 6.
In previous appearances, the court was told that he had yet to retain a lawyer. But during Thursday's brief appearance, the head of N.W.T. legal aid announced that Bulatci now has two lawyers.
Laura Stevens, an Edmonton-based lawyer, will be Bulatci's lead counsel, while Yellowknife legal aid lawyer Dan Rideout will also act for Bulatci.
The Crown announced that it would now begin handing evidence over to Bulatci's legal team. His next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 28.
At that time, Bulatci's lawyers hope to set a date for his preliminary inquiry.
Bulatci was arrested on Oct. 12 in Edmonton, following a week-long nationwide hunt sparked by Worden's death.
Worden, 30, was shot dead while responding to an early-morning call in Hay River, a town located about 400 kilometres south of Yellowknife.
