"He sped up and hit the building," said Whitehorse resident Ron Edwards, who was getting coffee when he saw the older-model truck swerving down Third Avenue.

Edwards said he was about two metres from the truck when it hit a large planter, crossed the road and crashed into the CBC building. The vehicle also sheared off a stop sign, sending it flying across the intersection.

"He staggered out. I thought he was OK, but then he was bleeding and then a whole bunch of people rushed over," Edwards said. "The vehicle's leaking fluids."

The driver, an adult male, was was given first aid at the scene by ambulance attendants for minor injuries.

RCMP are investigating the incident.

At the time of the crash, reporter Cheryl Kawaja was recording an interview in a radio studio just metres from the point where the truck came into contact with the building. The impact of the truck was loud enough to be picked up by microphones in the soundproof studio.

Smoke and gasoline fumes from the badly damaged truck filled the hallway outside the studio.

Firefighters neutralized gasoline leaking from the truck, while RCMP officers collected evidence at the scene.
