The Nunavut Housing Corp. has introduced a residential listing section on its website, so that anyone looking to buy, sell or rent a home can find listings across the territory in one place.
On March 29, Housing Minister Olayuk Akesuk announced the new feature, which people can access under the "Find a Home" link on the housing corporation's website.
Akesuk described the listings as a great communication tool that will help improve access to housing information in any Nunavut community.
Anyone wanting to sell their property or find rental tenants can register on the site and list what they have available, free of charge. Prospective home buyers can go on and click on any community to see what is available.
John Matthews with Atiilu Real Estate and Property Management in Iqaluit applauded the initiative.
"I think it's probably a good move by Nunavut Housing Corporation. And I don't think it's unlike them to do something along these lines. They are in the business of promoting home ownership and it's yet another helpful opportunity that they're giving us," he said Wednesday.
"It should help people [who] sell houses — me, my business included — and it should help people rent houses. Also, and probably more importantly, it should help the general public to find housing."
As of Thursday, the site had two listings: one for an apartment and one for condominiums, both in Iqaluit.
The Nunavut government has been struggling with a chronic housing shortage, especially in remote communities.
