Three teams brought a surprise to the end of a gruelling snowmobile race across Labrador by deciding to cross the finish line at once.
The three teams decided to claim a joint victory Wednesday night in the Cain's Quest race, which takes participants across about 2,000 kilometres of Labrador terrain.
Kent Careen, a member of one of the winning teams, said the three teams decided to help each other after encountering some particularly tough conditions.
"I expected it to be hard, but I'm going to tell you I didn't expect it to be what it was," Careen told CBC News after crossing the finish line in Labrador City.
"The gorges, the stuff we came down over, the stuff we climbed, the stuff we went through on our Ski-Doos — you would never believe a Ski-Doo could do it."
The race started March 10 and took the two-member teams from Labrador City to Happy Valley-Goose Bay and then back again. Eighteen teams registered for this year's race.
Organizers of Cain's Quest — named after explorer Jacques Cartier's 1534 description of Labrador as "the land that God gave to Cain" — are figuring out how to award first, second and third prizes.
The three teams say they would like to split the winnings — with a pot of $20,000 earmarked for the first-place team — evenly.
An awards banquet is scheduled for Saturday.
