A Whitehorse man has been charged after his dog was dragged behind a truck three kilometres along a city street in early February.

Stanley Gostel, 28, faces three counts of cruelty under the city's animal control bylaw.

The injured dog was found in front of a local veterinary clinic Feb. 11 with huge chunks of fur and skin missing from its body. Its paws were also raw.

Bylaw officer Dave Pruden said the dog, which has been nicknamed Trooper, was dragged halfway down Hamilton Boulevard behind a truck.

"It was tied to the bumper of the vehicle and dragged down to the intersection of Hamilton Boulevard and the Alaska Highway," Pruden told CBC News Monday.

"The only saving grace is we have snow and ice on the roads and that may have helped lessen the road rash the dog got."

Attendants at the Whitehorse animal shelter say the dog is recovering but it is on pain medication and still has a plastic cone on its head to keep it from licking its wounds.

Gostel is scheduled to make his first court appearance on April 24.
