He returned to his Whitehorse home in early October, just in time to fight the last week of the territorial election campaign.

Now he has returned to Vancouver, where he is expected to undergo a bone marrow transplant.

Before leaving Saturday, he told the CBC he would likely be away for at least three months.

"I have to be at the hospital pretty well every day for the following two months," said Hardy, a 49-year-old father of four.

"Hopefully it's a good time for it to happen. It will be over Christmas."

Hardy's eldest sister is donating bone marrow to her brother.

In his absence, the NDP's two other MLAs, Steve Cardiff and John Edzerza, will take turns as acting party leader.

Hardy will miss the 12-day fall sitting which begins with a throne speech Nov. 23.
