A Yellowknife wildlife officer has concluded that six dead dogs discovered near Yellowknife earlier this week were not used as wolf bait.

Raymond Bourget says only two of the six dogs, found near Fiddlers Lake lagoon, were near snares.

The snow around the snares was undisturbed, which he says suggests the were set up before the dog carcasses were left in the area.

Bourget says it's not his department's mandate to investigate who killed the dogs, but he will conduct an investigation of the snares.

"In this particular area in question, it would be legal to trap or snare wolves, the issue is the type of snares that were used were illegal snares," he says.

City workers discovered the six dead sled dogs after an anonymous tip. They had been shot in the head.

Yellowknife RCMP are investigating.
