Stephen Mansell appointed to Iqaluit city council

Former councillor Stephen Mansell, who finished second in October's byelection, will take over the vacant seat left by Mark Morrissey.

A new city councillor was appointed at Tuesday night's Iqaluit council meeting.

Former councillor Stephen Mansell will take over the vacant seat left by Mark Morrissey. Mansell wasn't at the meeting.

Mansell came in second by 20 votes to current councillor Noah Papatsie in the byelection last October. That byelection was held to fill the council seat left vacant after the death of Jimmy Kilabuk.

Councillor Terry Dobbin said he is happy with the choice.

"We certainly need eight councillors and Stephen Mansell is certainly qualified," he said. "He's been a past councillor, so I'm totally in favour of appointing Mansell as our next councillor."

Mansell has not yet been officially sworn in. Morrissey stepped down last month as he was leaving Nunavut to take a job in Alberta.
