Skagway ferry service to resume Sunday
Alaskan community's floating dock repaired after sinking 2 weeks ago
State ferry service in Skagway, Alaska, will resume this weekend as temporary repairs to the dock are now complete.
The ferry dock sank April 24. Engineers said a line that runs under the dock to supply water to the ferry ruptured and flooded concrete flotation chambers under the structure.
"Electrical systems needed to be completely replaced, the vehicle ramp hydraulic system also needed to have a lot of work done to it and then the passenger ramp also needed to have some new items added to it when the dock went underwater," said Jeremy Woodrow with the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.
He says permanent repairs to the dock will continue through the summer but they're not expected to affect ferry service.
Ferry service to Skagway will resume Sunday, May 11.
