Shots fired near children in Cape Dorset standoff
A gun and alcohol led to tense moments for some children in Cape Dorset, Nunavut, on Wednesday, RCMP say.
Shots were fired at officers responding to a call about an intoxicated man causing problems in a house, police said.
A man aimed his rifle at officers from the window of the home, then fired several shots, some toward a group of children, RCMP said.
A special response team in Iqaluit was notified and ready to fly to Cape Dorset to deal with the situation.
In the end, it wasn't needed, as local RCMP arrested the man, who is now facing weapons charges.
Police blame the incident on a recent shipment of alcohol into Cape Dorset.
Excessive drinking has kept police very busy for the past 24 hours, they said.
