Search underway for Nunavut elder who fell off sled
Elder missing near Baker Lake since Tuesday
A helicopter and another ground crew have joined the search near Baker Lake, Nunavut, for an elder who fell off a sled pulled by a snowmobile out on the land.
Local search and rescue officials in Baker Lake say the 72-year-old man has been missing since Tuesday.
"Essentially just from the details that we have right now is that this male and his grandson were travelling from Rankin Inlet when the elderly male fell from the sled and wasn't noticed," said Cpl. Jonathan Saxsby with the Baker Lake RCMP. "He’s been on the land on foot since Tuesday."
Saxsby said the missing elder is very healthy and knowledgeable about the Baker Lake area, and so far the weather has been good.
"It's good temperatures for this time of the year and very good visibility out there," he said. "Just a little bit of blowing snow."
About 25 volunteers from the communities of Chesterfield Inlet, Whale Cove, Rankin Inlet and Baker Lake are taking part in the search.
