Search resumes for missing Agnico-Eagle worker
The search for a worker who went missing Tuesday from a mining camp near Rankin Inlet resumed Thursday morning despite blizzard conditions in the region.
Michel Pilon of Timmins, Ont., an employee of Boart Longyear, was reported missing after he failed to arrive by snowmobile at a drill site three kilometres from Agnico-Eagle’s Meliadine camp.
Agnico-Eagle said search efforts were suspended overnight Wednesday due to blizzard conditions with zero visibility. Environment Canada reports nearly 90 centimetres of snow has fallen in the region since Tuesday morning. The blizzard is expected to end later Thursday.
Agnico-Eagle said its emergency response team is co-ordinating search efforts with Boart Longyear, the RCMP and community members.
The company said it is sending emergency response personnel from its Meadowbank mine near Baker Lake to assist in the search. It also said a helicopter is on standby at the Meliadine camp to help with the search as soon as weather conditions are safe for flying.
The Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission has been notified of the incident.
