Searchers near Baker Lake, Nunavut, remain optimistic they can find a missing elder a week after he fell off a sled while travelling back to the community.
The 72-year-old man was last seen May 7 riding in a qamutik, or traditional sled, towed behind his grandson's snowmobile. He fell off the sled somewhere on the trail between Rankin Inlet and Baker Lake.
The elder had no survival gear with him — just the clothes he was wearing.
Dozens of volunteers from Baker Lake, Rankin Inlet, Chesterfield Inlet and Whale Cove have been involved in the search.
Baker Lake RCMP Cpl. Jonathan Saxby said ground search teams from the community departed Monday morning to relieve teams that had been searching overnight.
"The efforts are continuing," he said. "The searchers remain positive."
Saxby said some of the searchers reportedly saw footprints in the search area Sunday.
The weather might become a problem for the search. The forecast is calling for snow over the next few days.
