Search called off for Toonik Tyme seal hunter in Iqaluit
Searchers found some equipment on ice and snowmobile tracks leading into water, RCMP say
The search has been called off for a 44-year-old Iqaluit man who went missing during Toonik Tyme after searchers found some of the man's equipment on ice and snowmobile tracks leading into the water, RCMP say.
The man was last seen by another hunter Monday around noon, travelling on snowmobile east of Iqaluit.
Police are not releasing the man's name but say he was a participant in a seal hunting contest during the annual spring festival.
The search began last night after the man failed to return late Monday afternoon as planned.
It included a Twin Otter as well as personnel from Nunavut Protection Services and local volunteers.
