Students at Qarmartalik School in Resolute were told to stay home Monday due to the number of polar bears around the community.
Simon Idlout, who patrols the community, says he had to chase away nine polar bears.
The patrols start early in the morning and Idlout says they also keep close watch near the school.
"Nunavut has a lot of polar bears, it always has. So we are used to seeing bears," he said in Inuktitut.
"We just make sure everyone's aware that they are here, especially in the fall."
Idlout suggests people carry a gun or a flare when they are going out and be aware when walking around.
