RCMP in Cape Dorset arrest man with firearm without injury

Part of Cape Dorset was cordoned off this morning while RCMP dealt with an armed man. The man has surrended to police and RCMP say charges are pending.

RCMP have arrested a man in Cape Dorset, after they were called to a residence at around 2 a.m. Part of the community had to be cordoned off and an Emergency Response Team was flown into Cape Dorset from Iqaluit.

"I believe someone was in contact with the male at the time and they called police just to make them aware of the situation," said Cst. Malcolm McNeil.

Police say the man surrendered himself to police around 11a.m. eastern time and neither the man nor any of the emergency responders were injured.

The residence in question is close to Sam Pudlat elementary school, which was closed this morning. The daycare in Peter Pitseolak school was also closed. A meeting of elders from across Nunavut was also delayed because of the situation.

Police say officers are continuing to investigate and charges against the man are pending.
