Puvirnituq, Que., votes to lift liquor restrictions
Mayor says current restrictions encourage bootlegging
The community of Puvirnituq, Que., has voted to lift restrictions on importing alcohol into the community.
Under the current rules people were allowed to order one bottle of hard liquor and a case of beer per month.
But in a referendum Thursday the community voted to do away with restrictions on the amount of alcohol people can order.
Aisara Kenuayuak, mayor of Puvirnituq, said he is in favour of lifting the restriction as it encouraged the activity of bootleggers in the community.
Aisara said Thursday's decision will come into effect on Oct. 8.
