Residents return to homes after visit from Explosives Disposal Unit

RCMP have safely destroyed a suspicious package discovered in a residential area in Yellowknife.

They say it's now safe for people to return home.

Police were alerted to the package around 9am, near the intersection of Magrum Crescent and Piro Court.

Much of the day was spent waiting for a explosive disposal unit from K-division Edmonton to arrive.

Local residents were told to clear the area as a precaution, and a few hundred metres of the roadway were closed for several hours.

RCMP have not made any statements about the nature of the package, other than it was "non-lethal" and that officers "examined the package and rendered it safe."

They're asking anyone with relevant information to contact Yellowknife RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
