A polar bear was shot and killed in Arviat, Nunavut, Sunday when it attacked a team of dogs.
"My husband shot a warning shot in the air to try and scare the bear away but it slapped our dog," said Kukik Baker.
She said she woke up Sunday and looked out her living room window to see truck headlights lighting up the area around her husband’s dog team, about 500 metres away.
A male bear had killed one of the dogs, and was attacking another.
Her husband, Darryl Baker, and a local bylaw officer shot and killed the bear.
Kukik Baker says it's a never-ending problem for the community and has people worried about their safety.
"It's really scary living in this area where it's polar bear central," she said. "It's also really frustrating for us having to get up in the middle of the night."
She said her husband had tried several times over the weekend to scare the bears away from his dogs but it didn't work.
