Owner builds new Dawson City, Yukon, café by hand
Florian Boulais built Alchemy Café out of logs
The owner of Dawson City's new Alchemy Café built his business from the ground up: cutting trees and constructing the log building by hand.
Florian Boulais spent the last couple of years building the café that opened for business this summer. He says he couldn't have done it without a lot of help from people in the community.
"There's more than 100 people involved with the idea, with lending tools or giving discounts or advice or just lending a hand once in a while," he says.
Many businesses in Dawson City close in the off-season, but Boulais and his wife Sophie Ashenhurst-Boulais say they plan to operate the café year round.
It's been open two months and business is far exceeding expectations, says Boulais.
"Business has pretty much been double what we expected in the business plan," he said.
Ashenhurst-Boulais says they are pleased with the finished product.
"It's a creative kind of expression that comes from a place of slowness, not hurrying," she says.
They say they hope the space is a welcoming alcohol-free spot for people to gather in the cold winter months.
