1 new mayor, 2 recounts in Monday's N.W.T. hamlet council elections

Floyd Lennie was elected mayor of Sachs Harbour, N.W.T., in Monday's hamlet elections. Two out of six other elections required recounts to determine who would sit on council.

"There was an automatic recount required for Tuktoyaktuk based on close results," said Bob Brooks, the territory's chief municipal electoral officer.

Billy Emaghok ultimately replaced Cindy Legrow as the fourth councillor elected. Emaghok ended up with 124 votes, with Legrow garnering 122.

Former Nunakput MLA Jackie Jacobson was among the others who won seats on Tuktoyaktuk's hamlet council. 

There was also an automatic recount required for Fort Providence, but there was no change in the final results.

Eight communities were scheduled for hamlet elections Monday, but only six held a vote. Councillors in Paulatuk and Ulukhaktok were all acclaimed. Ray Ruben Sr. was acclaimed mayor of Paulatuk. 

Voter turnout was highest in Sachs Harbour, at 77 per cent, and lowest in Fort Providence and Enterprise, where 32 per cent of voters turned out. Overall, only 46 per cent of voters turned out in the six communities that held elections.

Brooks also noted female representation on the newly elected councils. Thirty-three per cent of people elected on Monday night were women. In Sachs Harbour, there are no women on council and in Fort Resolution, 67 per cent of those elected are female.

Fort McPherson will holds its hamlet council election on Feb. 20.
