Dr. Isaac Sobol is stepping down as Nunavut's chief medical officer and leaving the territory next month.

Sobol, who has been the territory's top health official since October 2004, said he has decided not to renew his contract when it expires on April 10.

"I've had just an extraordinary opportunity here and I have a very warm spot for this cold place in my heart," Sobol said on Monday.

"My decision to leave my position was made many, many months ago, so I will be leaving before the end of April."

Sobol said he will be returning with his family to British Columbia, where he had worked with the North West Community Health Services Society and later with the University of British Columbia's Department of Family Practice.

There has been no word to date on who will replace Sobol as Nunavut's chief medical officer of health.
