The president of Qulliq Energy Corporation says customers in Nunavut will be paying an additional 4.13 cents per kilowatt hour for power starting Dec. 1.

Peter Mackey said the corporation needs to add a surcharge to power bills because of rising fuel costs.

"The Utilities Rates Review Council has accepted our application and has given us interim direction to apply the fuel rider on it," he said.

"They'll do their review process over the next month or two. Once they've completed their review process, they'll give some direction back to the minister in terms of what they say the actual rate should be."

Mackey said if this charge is not put in place now, rates could jump even higher when QEC applies to raise rates again late next year.   The fuel surcharge will be in effect until May 31.
