Nunavut's Justice Minister won't be running in next month's election.

Daniel Shewchuk, MLA for Arviat, made the announcement Friday morning in the legislative assembly.

Daniel Shewchuk, MLA for Arviat, has announced he won't be running for re-election in the upcoming territorial election.

"I leave knowing that we have made progress addressing some of the infrastructure needs with the construction of a new hamlet office, new arena upgrades and the construction of 50 much needed housing units over the next two years," he said.

"I know there is much more needed and I know our two new MLAs will work towards these needs."

Arviat will get a second seat in the assembly under the new electoral boundaries that come into effect with this election.

Shewchuk was elected in 2008. Before becoming Justice Minister, he was minister of the Environment, Human Resources, and Minister for Arctic College.
