People in Kuujjuarapik, Que., are keeping aclose eye on wildfires burning in northern Quebec.

There are several active fires in the province.

"Everyone was notified and our emergency teams were on hand to ensure the safety for the public," said Raymon Mikpigak, who works for the local Makivik Corp. office.

"Elders and pregnant women were also monitored so they were not badly affected by smoke inhalation."

Health board officials they are handing out face masks to elders and those in need. Local hunters are also on the lookout for dangerous areas.

Some people in nearby Sanikiluaq, Nunavut, also say they can see haze from the fires.

About 1,200 people live in Kuujjuarapik.
