Well known northern musician and community activist Ray Massey has died.

Massey passed away yesterday after a long battle with cancer.

He spent most of his time in Whitehorse and Inuvik, N.W.T.

Yukon MLA Kevin Barr was a friend of Massey's since the 1970s.

Barr says Massey went out of his way to help people and was integral in setting up the Whitehorse Folk Society.

"We can all, I think, thank Ray for having that vision," Barr said. "When [his death] was posted on Facebook, so many people cited how Ray helped them in their lives."

Massey was also instrumental in setting up Raven Recycling in Whitehorse.

A funeral has not yet been arranged.
