Newmont needs more time to remediate Con Mine site in N.W.T.
Company looks to extend its water licence for four years
The company cleaning up the Con Mine site in Yellowknife says it needs more time to remediate the area.
Earlier this week, Newmont Mining Company asked the Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Board to extend its water licence.
The current licence expires in November, but Newmont wants an extra four years.
The company says the transfer of ownership of the old mine site from Miramar Northern Mining Ltd. delayed the clean-up process. Newmont says there are still a number of outstanding jobs, including covering tailings ponds and hazardous waste sites.
Newmont needs to complete this final remediation work before the city can start work on its proposed recreation site for the area.
The land and water board will hold a hearing on the matter.
