New Whitehorse fire chief to take over March 31
Deputy chief Kevin Lyslo steps up as Clive Sparks retires
Kevin Lyslo will take over as Whitehorse fire chief on March 31.
Outgoing fire chief Clive Sparks has been with the City of Whitehorse for 40 years and is retiring at the end of this month.
Lyslo, who is currently deputy fire chief, has 20 years experience in the fire service, 15 of which have been with the Whitehorse Fire Department.
He says his best preparation for the job has come in the last year.
"Fortunately, over the last 12 months of my tenure as deputy fire chief, I've had an opportunity to act in the position for about nine months of that," he said. "And Operation Nanook last year and some wildfire abatement stuff in Carmacks, just some different experiences have helped get me ready."
Establishing the department's strategic plan is a priority for Lyslo. That's a document which will outline future goals such as station locations and staffing recommendations.
