Nunavut has a new Roman Catholic bishop after Father Tony Krotki was ordained at a ceremony in Rankin Inlet Thursday morning.

Krotki succeeds Bishop Reynald Rouleau, who retired as bishop of the Churchill-Hudson Bay diocese in February. The diocese comprises all of Nunavut and Churchill, Man.

About 250 people were on hand for the event.

Krotki has been living in Nunavut for 22 years. He most recently served as a priest in Igloolik.

"Our priest for Igloolik has been through a lot in his life and for god to choose him for this position we agree with him and very thankful for that," said Josephine Kublu of Igloolik, who attended the ceremony.

People came in from each community of Nunavut as well as from Winnipeg, Ottawa and Poland. Guests included Krotki's mother and sister.

"I'm very happy, I'm very open," said Krotki. "I see the smiles on the beautiful faces of my friends and those who will become friends. It's a beautiful feeling. Very, very rewarding."

A feast followed as part of the celebration.
