A shooting in Tuktoyaktuk, N.W.T., has shocked the community, but court records show the shooter had a long history of violence.

On at least five occasions, Diamond Keith Klengenberg, 38, was convicted of assaulting Jenny Pingo, 33. He assaulted her with a knife, and on other occasions he held her at gunpoint and threatened to kill her.

There were another seven charges laid which were withdrawn.

In 2003, Pingo wrote a victim impact statement. She described living in fear of her former boyfriend and called the assaults ‘the most scary experience that I’ve been through’.

The court records show Klengenberg was repeatedly sent to jail for attacking Pingo and ignoring court orders to stay away from his former girlfriend.

Klengenberg’s sentences included probation and jail time of less than four months.
