A Mistissini, Que., man has been arrested in connection with the death of 52-year-old Charlo Iserhoff over the weekend.
Police were called to a house party on Queen Street on the afternoon of Jan. 2, according to Joe Saganash of the Mistissini Eeyou Eenou Police Force.
Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Nathalie Girard says police arrested 25-year-old Jamie Iserhoff, a nephew of Charlo Iserhoff, on Tuesday. On Wednesday he was charged with forcible confinement and then released on conditions.
"It's almost like an additional death in the family because he's our relative," said Ashley Iserhoff, one of Charlo Iserhoff's nephews.
"It's hard to accept."
Saganash said both the victim and the suspect had been drinking, and Charlo Iserhoff was badly hurt. He was taken to the Mistissini clinic and then to the Chibougamau hospital where he died Jan. 3.
Girard says when the autopsy is complete, the Crown might lay further charges.
In the meantime, Charlo Iserhoff is being remembered for his sense of humour and his support for his family.
"[Charlo] was always there to help me and my siblings," Ashley Iserhoff said.
"He was a very caring individual even though he had a hard life himself."
