Mayor quits in Haines Junction, Yukon
Byelection to be called for some time next month
George Nassiopoulos, mayor of Haines Junction, Yukon, announced his resignation at a council meeting on Wednesday.
It comes just days after town CAO Michael Riseborough resigned.
Neither Riseborough or Nassiopoulos could be reached for comment.
Christine Smith, Yukon's director of Community Affairs, said the jobs had become increasingly challenging for both men.
"Some of it has to do with personal reasons and some of it is probably they must have some frustrations with their duties," she said. "This is not a one-time-only thing, it's just been building and both of them have indicated they just have to take care of themselves at this time."
Councillor Angie Charlebois said the resignations came as a shock and she's not sure why the two quit.
She said deputy mayor Mike Crawshay is expected to chair next week's meeting and a Yukon Government community advisor has been assigned to assist with municipal affairs.
A byelection will be called for some time next month to elect a new mayor. Community advisors say it will be up to the town council to find a new administrative officer.
