Montreal police have been called in to investigate a violent standoff in the Nunavik community of Salluit.
A man died yesterday after a standoff with local and provincial officers.
The incident began after the Kativik Regional police force has been called to a home around noon.
Montreal police spokesman Simon Delorme says a 23-year-old man barricaded himself inside a house and shot at an officer.
"A major perimeter was done and the first police officer asked for the backup, for the help of la Surete du Quebec, the station of Kuujuaq," said Delorme.
SQ negotiators attempted to reason with the man but he refused to leave the house.
Later in the afternoon, police officers heard a gun fire inside the house and then saw the house starting to burn.
"The police officers (got) inside to help the man, even if there was a threat for their lives, and they found the man dead inside the house," Delorme said.
The incident comes a week after a man was killed in the town of Akulivik, Nunavik in a police operation.
The man had shot and wounded an officer.
Last March, two officers with the Kativik force were shot responding to a domestic dispute in the Northern Quebec town of Kuujjuaq.
One of the officers later died in hospital.
