RCMP say the man arrested Saturday had just been released from jail on Thursday, after serving five months for a weapons charge in Nunavut. (CBC)

RCMP have arrested a man in Yellowknife in connection with verbally threatening a woman and assaulting her with an unknown weapon. 

Police got the call from the woman around 6:20 p.m. Friday night. She told them she was walking by the Gallery of the Midnight Sun when the man approached her from behind and assaulted her. 

After arresting the man, police found out he had just been released from the North Slave Correctional Facility on Thursday. He was there for five months, facing a weapon charge that happened in Nunavut. 

The man now faces charges of assault with a weapon, uttering threats, resisting arrest and four breach of probation charges. 

The investigation continues.
