Makivik Corp donates money to Lac-Mégantic family
Contract worker was in Kangiqsujuaq at time of explosion
Makivik Corporation has raised $2,000 for a family who lost their home in the train derailment and explosion at Lac-Mégantic, Que.
Miroslav Chum, who specializes in hydraulic infrastructure, has been doing contract work in Nunavik for about 15 years.
Chum was in Kangiqsujuaq inspecting a wharf when the train derailment and explosion happened in Lac-Mégantic. His 100-year-old house burned to the ground.
Chum said his whole family is lucky to be alive. His spouse was working in Sherbrooke and his two children were being cared for by friends in another town.
"My family, just by chance, was outside of the house," he said. "The situation is so incredible for me, for us."
Chum said they are now looking for an apartment to rent but the search is proving to be difficult.
He's not even sure if he'll rebuild in the same spot because of the possibility of contamination from the diesel fuel explosion.
Chum said he's grateful to people who have been donating food, clothing and money.
