The first lightning-caused fire of the season was reported in Yukon's Mayo district Monday afternoon.

The 40-hectare fire is currently 42 kilometres southwest of Stewart Crossing.

Yukon Wildland Fire Management is monitoring the fire but not fighting it, as it is in a wilderness area and no structures are at risk.

There were more than 100 lightning strikes in the northern part of the territory Monday. Crews will do patrols Tuesday to check reports of fires in the Eagle Plains area on the Dempster Highway.

More lightning is in the forecast for the rest of the week.
