A support group for men in the Kivalliq region of Nunavut is holding a gathering this week in Coral Harbour, but funding cuts mean it may be one of the group’s last meetings.
Noel Kaludjak, who started Angutiit Makigiarngningit, said these types of meetings are important for men.
"We will always make mistakes but if we get through the anger that we hold in us, life gets better," he said in Inuktitut. "Then these men become better fathers and better husbands."
He said counsellors will be at the meeting to provide support.
Kaludjak said the group’s funding from Health Canada is in question.
"Right now we get funding from Health Canada and we are applying for funding again. But we are sorry the funding from them through the Pulaarvik Kablu Friendship Centre [in Rankin Inlet] is ending on March 31, 2013, and that this meeting we are having here in Coral Harbour may be the last one."
The meetings continue over the weekend until Monday.
