Kakee Kootoo, 21, faces charges in Iqaluit standoff

Kakee Kootoo has been charged with the careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and failure to comply with a probation order following a standoff in Iqaluit on Saturday.

An Iqaluit man is facing charges following a standoff with police over the weekend.

On Saturday morning, RCMP closed off roads around the 700-block for more than three hours after responding to a call about a distraught man in a home with a gun. 

Kakee Kootoo, 21, has been charged with the careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and failure to comply with a probation order. He appeared before a Justice of the Peace Monday at the Nunavut Court of Justice.

Kootoo was released on several conditions including keeping the peace and abstaining from intoxicating substances. Kootoo is also not allowed to have a firearm or weapon. He is scheduled to appear before a judge in Iqaluit on Aug. 25.
