A jury of six women and six men will decide if the chief of Dettah, N.W.T., is guilty or not guilty of sexual assault.

The trial of chief Edward Sangris began Monday morning in Yellowknife. He is accused of sexually assaulting a woman several times between 1986 and 1996.

Sangris has pleaded not guilty to three charges of sexual assault.

The jurors have this afternoon off as the lawyers argue preliminary issues in the trial.
