Iqaluit city council has decided to hold a byelection to fill the empty council seat left by the late Jimmy Kilabuk.
The byelection will be held on Oct. 28, the same day as the territorial election.
Tuesday was the deadline for councillors to make a decision on whether to hold a byelection.
"Tonight was D-Day in terms of appointing the chief electoral officer, so that item was actually on the agenda but obviously had to be preceded by which way we were going to go," said Mayor John Graham.
Council decided to appoint Kirt Ejesiak as Chief Municipal Electoral Officer. Ejesiak oversaw last fall's municipal election.
Graham estimates the byelection will cost the city $39,000 to $40,000.
That's a lot less than the cost of holding a byelection separately from the territorial election.
