The owner of an Iqaluit coffee shop rescued a 19-year-old woman from icy Frobisher Bay Sunday morning.

Brian Twerdin, owner of Grind and Brew, was starting work at around 7:30 a.m. when one of his employees spotted the woman in distress in the water across from the shop.

Twerdin ran across the street and into the water, swimming out to assist the woman back to shore.  They had reached the beach by the time police arrived.

The woman was taken to Qikiqtani General Hospital where she was treated for hypothermia and is being held for psychiatric assessment.

Police say the woman’s family and friends have expressed their gratitude to her rescuer and hospital staff for their assistance.
