Nakasuk Elementary School in Iqaluit was closed for the day Tuesday after vandals broke in overnight and sprayed fire extinguishers throughout the building.

"Fire extinguisher chemicals, it's a fine dust, it lands on pretty much anything," said Const. Stephane Kilabuk.

"It floats in the air and it will land on every possible object that's in the school, so everything is going to have to be wiped down before the kids are brought back into the school."

Kilabuk said police are going through video surveillance footage from inside the school. He said right now it appears that six or seven boys younger than 18 were involved.

Kilabuk is not sure why the school's alarm system didn't go off. Police only found out about the vandalism this morning.

There was no structural damage but Kilabuk said the vandalism is a major inconvenience to students, staff and parents.
