RCMP G Division announced this week it has funding to replace the aging Inuvik, N.W.T., detachment building.
Inuvik’s current detachment was built in 1959 and Staff Sgt. Michael Babineau says it's showing its age.
"Presently the building has deficiencies in heating, in plumbing," he said. "It’s very hard to maintain this building as it presently stands. It was time to find an alternate solution which was building a new detachment."
The RCMP say architectural plans are still being finalized and they are taking the community and culture into consideration in the design.
The current detachment will stay fully operational until the new building opens.
Construction is expected to begin in 2013 and the new detachment is scheduled to open in 2015.
