Children in Cambridge Bay are enjoying new sports equipment, thanks in part to a cruise company. The gift would have usually cost the community thousands of dollars in freight cost alone.
The Nunavut community on Victoria Island welcomed a cruise ship on August 25.
Laurielle Penny is with World Wide Quest. The company offers a cruise through the Northwest Passage every summer.
She said one of the passengers offered the donation through Canadian Tire’s SportsCheck Jump Start Program.
"It was a great opportunity to make a connection between a passenger, a program we’re doing, a ship that can get the material there, and a community that has a lot of young people interested in playing sports. We’re talking about hockey equipment for fifty to sixty young people," she said.
To show appreciation residents held a demonstration of cultural activities for the 84 passengers on the cruise ship.
