The community of Hay River is still in shock after a woman was found dead at a nearby beach June 27.

Charmaine Corrigal was 32 years old. The RCMP are waiting for autopsy results.

Andrew Cassidy, mayor of Hay River, says everyone in town is "shocked."

"We are just hoping to get some answers on this so we can have closure and let the healing begin."

Roberta Sabourin was a friend of Corrigal's and says she was strong, outspoken, and had an infectious smile.

"We'd give her a bed to sleep in, we'd give her the shirt off our backs, because she was just that kind of person," she said. "To us, and because we would take her in, she started calling me and my old man 'mom and dad.'"

Sabourin says Corrigal used work with her mother at the mines in Saskatchewan.

Sabourin says the death should be an eyeopener for the community and a message to be safe.

Corrigal's death is still under investigation.

She leaves behind a young son.

Her funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Catholic church in Hay River.
