Hay River candy store shuts after 26 years

Sisters Shari and Pat Burnstad and Diana Field ran Joey's Sweets and Things in Hay River, N.W.T., for more than 25 years.
Hay River candy store closes its doors 2:20

Hay River, N.W.T., candy store Joey's Sweets and Things closed Friday after 26 years.

The store run by sisters Shari and Pat Burnstad and Diana Field sold candy, ice cream and craft supplies.

Former teacher Shari Burnstad says they had strong feelings about education and refused to sell candy to children who were skipping school.

"I hate to see the kids skip, which is really what they're doing when they come in at 2:30 or 1:30 or whatever," she said.

"We just said the policy is we don't serve you, and they respected it."

They say the reason they closed the shop was that they are getting older.

"I really don't want to keep doing this when I'm 70, 80 or 90," said Pat Burnstad.

Hay River's candy supply is not in jeopardy as the sisters' ice cream machine is moving to another store and a shop across the street will take on the candy sales.
